From one to another

The last attempt at dyeing got me real excited. Kept me pondering how I can create more with less. Finally struck me, I should not be thinking too hard. Instead of dyeing the whole piece of fabric, maybe I should just concentrate on the part which showcase the biggest area. After all, the rest of the fabric will be twisted. But how do I make sure that it is the area that I need? Remembered that I saw in Ryan's recent blog (Fundoshi Advertisements) that show a fundoshi with a slit in the middle to hold it in place. Maybe this will work. In my excitement to get started, I accidentally cut the tee shirt wrongly and had a much narrower strip of fabric. Decided to go ahead and still used it as I was still experimenting to see if it will work. This time instead of tie dyeing, decided to just use the pen to draw out as I did like the carp drawing fundoshi on Ryan's blog. Google some designs and finally came up with this. Which ended up looking more like butterflies than dragonflies.

 

Dying to try dyeing

Finally another new fundoshi blogger on Fundoshialan. In his blog not just posting of fundoshi but a great showcase of his DIY version of the fundoshi. Being a great fan of DIY, I had been fashioning my fundoshi out of old clothes. Each taking me days, maybe weeks, even months as I painstakingly tried to make sure the sides are well sewn to hide all the loose thread after cutting and joining pieces to make up for the length.

In Alan's blog, I like his rustic approach and it make me realised and love the idea very much. His previous posting (Classic White Fundoshi: Now In Living Color.....) turning a white fundoshi into multi-color really caught my curiosity. His reply to my comments on his Tumblr, got me into over-drive. With no knowledge of fabric or dyes, I decided to give it a try after a very quick and brief research on the net. 

As I have no idea where I can get clothing dye here since it isn't popular, I decided to start by trying some food colouring from my mom's kitchen cabinets. Soaking the cloth in the food dye over night, all excited the next morning to rinse it only to discover nothing stayed on the cloth. So more research on the net and found out I could also use fruit or vegetables as dye. So beets, turmeric, pandanus leave and blue bell pea flower were my next attempts. This time I tried pouring various colour over the tied cloth and let it sit overnight. Again the next morning, when I rinsed the cloth, all the colour got washed out, except for the yellowish turmeric which turn my white cloth yellowish. Really disheartened this time around. Seems like I am not going to get my fun after all.

I had to think fast, how to let the colour stay on. Suddenly the idea of using my white board markers struck me. So I took the markers and soak the fillers into 3 cups of spirit and I quickly had 3 cups of coloured inks. Again I poured over the tied cloth and immediate rinsed off. The only coloured that stain was the red marker ink. The blue and green washed off immediately when it hit the water bath. Decided to try again but this time leaving it to dry out a bit longer.It works better but the longer they stay in the water bath, more ink start to wash off. So decided to let the cloth dry out while still twisted in the bands. When it dried, I was really amazed at my very first attempt in dying my fundoshi. It's definitely not as professional as Alan's but with no knowledge and limited resources, this will have to do, for now.

Haven't been taking picture and my digital camera seems to be failing. Most of the images were either off focus or the colour was not right even with the build in flash. At the end only managed to have this few after redoing a lot of the shoots.

 

So that's how it got started...

I had almost forgotten how it all got started. Recently from Fundoshi4all blog, I link up to another new fundoshi lover blog: Fundoshialan. Alan's blog record his journey with experiments from using different fabric to create his own fundoshi. His daring adventure to get away from the store bought fundoshi to his effort in taking different angles and mood, reminded me of my initial attempt in fundoshi. I too had started out without know a thing about fundoshi. Never came across the term and just experiment with strip of cloth to make into a loin. Than I met Zzzdragon and found out more about the japanese term and have never looked back since till now. Decided to dig up what I can find of my past effort.

 

 

 

 

 

 

a little more from the cage in fundoshi series

A while back, zzzdragon loan me his chastity cage CB6K with a parting phrase that I should try to stay locked for 7 days which was his record than. After a few attempts trying to get used to the cage, I finally managed with a little help from an online keyholder.
